I learned this week how important and useful technology can be in the classroom. In the past I used to think that implementing technology into the classroom would only refer to Power Point or a film clip or something. I was taken aback when other classmates shared their ideas of different things they could use in the classroom.
My idea that I shared in class was teaching juniors and seniors in high school about similes and metaphors (I want to be an English teacher). I figured I would give them some examples found in literature first to get those marbles rolling around in their brain. I would then proceed by giving them a list of common similes and metaphors. Each student would create a photo that sets a scene describing one of the similes listed. I would then give them class time to use Photoshop to edit their pictures. They must then share their picture in class with a brief description of the story behind the simile.
I feel as if being an English teacher is a little harder to add technology in the everyday classroom, because students are to be reading books and writing papers. I loved hearing about Brit's idea of creating a crossword puzzle for literary terms or reading questions. I thought it would be also cool to use Google maps when we are learning about an author's life or what kind of setting the author created for the novel we are reading.
Megan: Sometimes I feel the same way as you do! As a math teacher, what kind of technology will I really use? But, after class, I realized there are so many different ways to convey the message I want to present. I also loved your idea about using Photoshop to alter pictures to represent a simile. I'm totally a visual person, and I love editing pictures!

ReplyDeleteLike you said, I think it can sometimes be really hard to think of ways to use technology, but I definitely think that if you can find things like your idea with pictures and Britt's idea with the crossword puzzles then you can engage students who otherwise would not enjoy English class. I know a lot of students who HATED English, but if you can find ways to make it relevant to them through technology, you can make more an impact and teach them more than you could otherwise!
I can totally see where you're coming from. Before I only could vision technology in the classroom as a Power Point or a DVD. Now we have advanced our technology and the ways you can use it to teach and learn. I thought your idea was great with the similes. Even though it is hard to think of something to do as an English teacher you still had a great idea. I think as we get more practice it will be easier to come up with ideas.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree. I am so not tech savvy and the idea of having to use technology in my classroom honesty made me cringe inside. Thanks for putting your thoughts up! I think it's really cool that we, as future teachers, can learn from others that are more tech savvy and their ideas.
